What the HbA1c Test measures
HbA1c measures the proportion of haemoglobin in your blood that has glucose bound to it. Because red blood cells circulate for around four months, the result reflects your average blood glucose over the preceding eight to twelve weeks rather than the level on the morning of the test. That makes it the standard way to diagnose type 2 diabetes and to judge whether existing treatment is holding, since a single fasting sugar reading can be thrown off by a heavy meal the night before, an infection, or a poor night of sleep. Most people with diagnosed diabetes repeat it every three to six months. A doctor may also order it alongside a fasting glucose where symptoms point to diabetes but the sugar reading sits in a grey zone. The result is less reliable if you have anaemia, a haemoglobin variant such as thalassaemia trait, chronic kidney or liver disease, or have had a transfusion recently — all of which change how long red cells survive.

Preparation
No fasting required, and you can take the test at any hour. Carry on with your usual medication unless your doctor says otherwise, and mention any recent blood transfusion or known haemoglobin disorder when you book, as both affect how the result should be read.

Do I need to fast for an HbA1c test?
No. HbA1c reflects your average glucose over the past two to three months, so a recent meal does not change it. You can walk in at any point during our 8:00 AM to 9:30 PM hours or book a home collection slot.
How often should I repeat it if I have diabetes?
