  • Bleeding from the gums or nose, blood in vomit, urine or stool, or black stools

Go to the nearest hospital emergency, or call +91 91023 14884, our 24-hour helpline, which can arrange an ambulance or hospital referral.

NS1 or IgM: which dengue test, and when?

NS1 antigen is a part of the dengue virus that can be found in the blood early in the illness. The test is most useful in the first 5 days of fever.

IgM antibodies are made by the body in response to the infection and usually become detectable from about day 5 of fever. IgG antibodies appear later and can also point to an earlier dengue infection, so IgG on its own does not confirm a current one.

A negative result early on does not always rule dengue out. Your doctor may repeat a test or add another one depending on the day of fever and your symptoms.

Platelet count (CBC). In dengue the platelet count often falls for a few days, and haematocrit can rise. A doctor may ask for a CBC to be repeated, sometimes daily, until you recover.

Other causes of fever. Malaria, typhoid and chikungunya can look similar in the first few days, so a doctor may order these tests alongside dengue tests.

Until a doctor has seen you, avoid aspirin and ibuprofen-type painkillers, rest and drink plenty of fluids. A general physician at Pure Bliss can see you and decide which tests you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dengue test questions

Which dengue test should I take, NS1 or IgM?

It depends on how many days you have had fever. The NS1 antigen test is most useful in the first 5 days. IgM antibodies usually appear from about day 5 onwards. Some doctors order both together. Your doctor will decide based on your symptoms.

Does a negative NS1 test mean I do not have dengue?

Not always. NS1 can be negative, especially later in the illness or in a repeat infection. If fever continues, a doctor may advise an IgM test or a repeat CBC. Keep watching for warning signs.

Do I need to fast for a dengue test?

No. Dengue NS1, IgM, IgG and CBC do not need fasting. Drink fluids as your doctor advises.

Can the dengue test be done at home in New Town?

Yes. A phlebotomist can collect the sample at home from 7:30 AM. Free home collection near the clinic; for longer distances only the bike-taxi fare is added, told to you before booking. Call or WhatsApp +91 91023 14884.

When should I go to a hospital?

Go to a hospital emergency straight away if you notice severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, any bleeding, drowsiness or confusion, cold clammy skin or difficulty breathing. These signs often appear around the time the fever comes down. You can call +91 91023 14884, our 24-hour helpline, which can arrange an ambulance or hospital referral.
