Fasting Blood Sugar Test (FBS) in New Town, Kolkata

At Pure Bliss Healthcare Centre, Action Area 2, New Town.

What the Fasting Blood Sugar Test (FBS) measures

A fasting blood sugar test measures the glucose in your blood after at least eight hours without food. With the effect of a recent meal removed, it shows how well your body controls sugar at rest, which makes it one of the basic tests for screening and diagnosing diabetes and prediabetes, and for checking how treatment is working. Commonly used guideline cut-offs, such as those of the American Diabetes Association, treat a fasting value of 126 mg/dL or higher on two separate occasions as diabetes, and 100 to 125 mg/dL as prediabetes. A diagnosis is always made by a doctor, often together with an HbA1c, never on one reading alone. A single result can be pushed up by an illness, stress, poor sleep, steroid medicines, or by not fasting properly, and an unusually long fast can also change it. That is why doctors often pair FBS with HbA1c, which reflects the average over two to three months, or with a post-meal sugar to see how your body handles food.

Price: the Fasting Blood Sugar Test (FBS) costs ₹72 at Pure Bliss (MRP ₹90), with the sample collected at our Action Area 2, New Town centre or at your home.

Reporting time

Same day for morning samples; otherwise within 24 hours.

Sample

Blood, from a vein in the arm (fluoride tube for glucose).

Reading the result

Ranges vary by lab; your report shows the lab's reference range next to each value. Ask your doctor to interpret the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fasting Blood Sugar Test (FBS) — common questions

Booking, preparation and reporting for the Fasting Blood Sugar Test (FBS) at Action Area 2, New Town.

How long should I fast before a fasting blood sugar test?

Eight to twelve hours, with plain water allowed. An overnight fast with an early morning slot is the easiest way. Fasting much longer than twelve hours is not helpful.

Can I have tea or coffee before the test?

No. Even black tea or coffee can affect the result. Plain water is fine.

Should I take my diabetes medicine before the test?

Usually doctors advise taking the morning diabetes medicine after the sample, with breakfast, to avoid a low sugar while fasting. Follow your own doctor’s instructions.

Is FBS or HbA1c better?

They answer different questions. FBS shows your sugar this morning; HbA1c shows your average over the past two to three months. Doctors often use both.
