What the Bilirubin Total Test measures
This test measures total bilirubin, the yellow pigment produced when red blood cells are broken down and then cleared by the liver into bile. It gives a single number without splitting it into direct and indirect forms. That makes it a quick, inexpensive way to follow a known problem, for example to see whether jaundice is settling after hepatitis or after treatment for a blocked bile duct, once the pattern has already been worked out. On its own it cannot tell whether a high value comes from faster red cell breakdown, from Gilbert syndrome (a common harmless condition), or from the liver or bile ducts. For a first investigation of jaundice or abnormal liver tests, doctors usually ask for the split bilirubin test or the full liver function test instead. Total bilirubin also rises a little with fasting and illness, so a small change between two results is not always meaningful.
Price: the Bilirubin Total Test costs ₹160 at Pure Bliss (MRP ₹200), with the sample collected at our Action Area 2, New Town centre or at your home.
Who this test is for
- Following known jaundice as it settles
- Monitoring known Gilbert syndrome or liver disease, as advised by your doctor
- A quick recheck after an earlier raised bilirubin
- Newly yellow eyes or skin, though the split or full liver test is usually preferred first
How to prepare, the sample, and when to expect the report
Preparation
Our team will tell you when booking whether a few hours without food are preferred. Avoid a heavy, fatty meal just before the test.
Sample
Blood, from a vein in the arm (serum).
Reporting time
Morning samples are reported the same day; later samples by the next day.
Reading the result
Reference ranges differ between laboratories, so your report lists the laboratory’s own range beside each value. A result outside the range does not always mean illness; ask your doctor to explain it.
