Calcium Test (Serum Calcium) in New Town, Kolkata
At Pure Bliss Healthcare Centre, Action Area 2, New Town.
What the Calcium Test (Serum Calcium) measures
This test measures the total calcium in your blood. Almost all of the body’s calcium is in the bones, and the small amount in the blood is kept within a narrow range by parathyroid hormone and vitamin D, because nerves, muscles and the heart depend on it. About half of blood calcium is carried on albumin, a protein, so a low albumin lowers the total calcium figure even when the active calcium is normal; doctors then calculate a corrected value or order an ionised calcium test. A high calcium is most often caused by an overactive parathyroid gland, and can also come from some cancers or from taking too much vitamin D or calcium. A low calcium can come from vitamin D deficiency, kidney disease, low magnesium, or reduced parathyroid function, for example after thyroid or neck surgery. Symptoms of low calcium include tingling around the mouth or in the fingers and muscle cramps; high calcium can cause thirst, constipation, tiredness and kidney stones. This test does not measure bone strength: osteoporosis is diagnosed with a bone density scan.

Calcium Test (Serum Calcium) — common questions
Booking, preparation and reporting for the Calcium Test (Serum Calcium) at Action Area 2, New Town.
If my calcium is normal, are my bones healthy?
Not necessarily. The body keeps blood calcium steady even when bones are losing calcium. Bone strength is checked with a bone density scan, and your doctor may also check vitamin D.
What is the difference between total and ionised calcium?
Total calcium includes the part carried on proteins; ionised calcium is the free, active part. Ionised calcium is ordered when proteins are abnormal or a precise answer is needed.
Is calcium included in other tests here?
Yes. The kidney function test (KFT) listed here includes calcium, so you may not need it separately.
