What the Urine Culture Test measures
A urine culture identifies the specific organism causing a urinary tract infection and, just as importantly, reports which antibiotics that organism responds to. A routine urine examination can suggest an infection within the hour by showing pus cells, but only a culture names the bacterium and tests it against a panel of drugs. That second part matters increasingly in Kolkata, where resistance to first-line oral antibiotics is common enough that treating on guesswork often fails. The sample is incubated and any growth is quantified, so the report distinguishes a genuine infection from ordinary skin contamination picked up during collection. Doctors order it for burning or stinging while passing urine, needing to go urgently or frequently, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, lower abdominal or flank pain, fever with no clear source, recurrent infections, and routinely in pregnancy, where an infection without symptoms still needs treatment. How to prepare, and when to expect the report
Preparation
Collect a clean-catch midstream sample: wash the area first, pass the first part into the toilet, then collect the middle portion in the sterile container we provide. A first-morning sample is best. Critically, collect it before starting antibiotics — even one dose can suppress growth and produce a falsely negative culture. Bring the sample to the centre within an hour, or refrigerate it if that is not possible.

Why does a urine culture take two to three days?
Bacteria have to be cultured before they can be identified and tested against antibiotics. There is no way to shorten the growth step. If you need an immediate answer, a urine routine and microscopy report is available the same day, though it cannot name the organism.
Can I give the sample after starting antibiotics?
It is far better not to. Even a single dose can stop bacteria growing in culture and give a negative result despite a real infection. If you have already started, tell your doctor so the report is read with that in mind.
How do I collect a midstream sample correctly?
Wash first, begin passing urine into the toilet, then move the sterile container into the stream to catch the middle portion, and finish in the toilet. This washes away organisms living around the opening that would otherwise contaminate the sample.
Can you collect a urine sample from home?
We provide sterile containers and our home collection team can carry the sample back from Action Areas 1, 2 and 3, Rajarhat and Chinar Park. The sample should reach the laboratory within an hour of collection, or be refrigerated until pickup.
