What the Testosterone Test (Total) measures

This test measures the total amount of testosterone in the blood, including the part bound to proteins and the small free part. Testosterone is the main male sex hormone, made mostly by the testes in men, and in much smaller amounts by the ovaries and adrenal glands in women. In men it supports sex drive, erections, sperm production, muscle and bone strength, energy and mood. Doctors check it when a man has symptoms that may point to low testosterone, such as reduced sex drive, erection problems, fertility problems, loss of body hair, or ongoing tiredness and low mood without another cause. Testosterone is highest in the morning and falls through the day, and short-term illness, poor sleep and some medicines can lower it, so a low result is usually confirmed with a repeat early-morning sample before any treatment is considered. In women, total testosterone is commonly checked when there is excess facial or body hair, acne, irregular periods, or suspected polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). A separate free testosterone test, or a calculation that uses SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin), is sometimes added when total testosterone alone does not explain the symptoms.

Price: the Testosterone Test (Total) costs ₹536 at Pure Bliss (MRP ₹670), with the sample collected at our Action Area 2, New Town centre or at your home.

How to prepare, the sample, and when to expect the report

  1. Preparation

Give the sample in the morning, ideally between 7 and 10 AM, when levels are highest. When low testosterone is being checked, many doctors prefer a fasting morning sample, so follow your doctor’s advice. Avoid testing during or just after an acute illness if you can. Tell us about any hormone treatment, steroids or other medicines, and stop biotin supplements for 48 hours beforehand.

  2. Sample

Blood, from a vein in the arm (serum).

  3. Reporting time

    Within 24 hours.

  4. Reading the result

Expected testosterone values differ by sex, age and laboratory method. Because levels are highest in the morning and vary from day to day, a single low result in a man is commonly repeated on an early-morning sample before it is treated as low. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, so your report lists the laboratory’s own range beside each value. A result outside the range does not always mean illness; ask your doctor to explain it.

The Testosterone Test (Total) can be booked at the clinic in Action Area 2 or with a home collection from 7:30 AM. Patients come to us from Action Area 1, Action Area 3, Rajarhat, Chinar Park, Salt Lake Sector V, Sukhobrishti and Eco Park.

Frequently asked questions

Testosterone Test (Total) — common questions

Booking, preparation and reporting for the Testosterone Test (Total) at Action Area 2, New Town.
Why should the test be done in the morning?
Testosterone follows a daily rhythm and is highest in the early morning. A sample taken later in the day can read lower and make the level look falsely low.
What is the difference between total and free testosterone?
Most testosterone in the blood is bound to proteins. Total testosterone measures all of it; free testosterone measures only the small unbound part. Doctors usually start with total testosterone and add free testosterone or SHBG when needed.
Why is testosterone tested in women?
In women, a raised testosterone can cause excess hair growth, acne and irregular periods, and it is one of the tests used when polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is suspected.
Can the sample be collected at home?
Yes. Home blood sample collection across New Town, Rajarhat, Chinar Park and Salt Lake, with slots from 7:30 AM. An early-morning slot suits this test. Call or WhatsApp +91 91023 14884 to book.
