ESR Test (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) in New Town, Kolkata
At Pure Bliss Healthcare Centre, Action Area 2, New Town.
What the ESR Test (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) measures
The erythrocyte sedimentation rate measures how far red blood cells fall through a column of blood in one hour, reported in millimetres per hour. When the blood contains more inflammatory proteins, such as fibrinogen and immunoglobulins, red cells clump together and settle faster, so the ESR rises. That makes it a simple, inexpensive sign that inflammation is present somewhere in the body, but nothing more specific than that. Infections, rheumatic and autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and polymyalgia rheumatica, tuberculosis, anaemia, kidney disease and pregnancy can all raise it, and it tends to be higher in women and in older people. ESR also changes slowly: it can take days to rise and weeks to settle, so it reflects the recent course of a condition rather than how you are today. Doctors read it alongside your symptoms and other tests, often together with CRP, and use it to follow known inflammatory conditions over months. A normal ESR does not rule out illness, and a mildly raised value in someone who feels well is often not significant.

Preparation
No fasting or special preparation is needed. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or have had a recent infection, as both raise ESR.
Reporting time
Same day for morning samples; otherwise within 24 hours.
Sample
Blood, from a vein in the arm.
Reading the result
Ranges vary by lab; your report shows the lab's reference range next to each value. The expected range depends on age and sex, so the report gives the range that applies to you. Ask your doctor to interpret the result.

ESR Test (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) — common questions
Booking, preparation and reporting for the ESR Test (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) at Action Area 2, New Town.
Should I book an ESR or a CRP?
They answer slightly different questions. CRP rises and falls within days, so it reflects what is happening now; ESR moves slowly and can stay raised for weeks. Many doctors order both. Book the one on your prescription.
Is ESR included in a blood count?
The plain CBC does not include it, but the Complete Hemogram (CBC & ESR) does. If you are having a hemogram, you do not need a separate ESR.
Does a high ESR mean cancer?
Usually not. Infections, anaemia, pregnancy and inflammatory conditions are far more common reasons. A persistently high ESR without an explanation is something your doctor will look into with other tests.
