What the Blood Group Test (ABO and Rh) measures
A blood group test finds out which ABO group you belong to (A, B, AB or O) and whether you are Rh positive or Rh negative, based on markers called antigens on the surface of your red blood cells. Your blood group is inherited from your parents and does not change during life. Knowing it matters before a blood transfusion, before surgery, and in pregnancy. In pregnancy, if the mother is Rh negative and the baby is Rh positive, the mother’s immune system can make antibodies that may affect the baby in this or a later pregnancy. That is why Rh status is checked early in every pregnancy, and why Rh negative mothers are usually offered an anti-D injection at certain times, as decided by the obstetrician. The test is also needed for blood donation, and many people simply want to know their group for official forms, for their records, or in case of an emergency. Before an actual transfusion, the hospital always repeats the grouping and also does a cross-match between your blood and the donor blood; a blood group report from a laboratory does not replace those checks.
Price: the Blood Group Test (ABO and Rh) costs ₹112 at Pure Bliss (MRP ₹140), with the sample collected at our Action Area 2, New Town centre or at your home.

How to prepare, the sample, and when to expect the report
Preparation
No fasting or preparation is needed, and the sample can be given at any time of day. If you have had a blood transfusion in the last three months, tell us, as it can affect the result.
Sample
Blood, from a vein in the arm (whole blood in an EDTA tube).
Reporting time
Reported the same day if the sample is given before noon, else by the next day.
Reading the result
The result is reported as a blood group (A, B, AB or O) and Rh type (positive or negative) rather than as a number. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, so your report lists the laboratory’s own range beside each value. A result outside the range does not always mean illness; ask your doctor to explain it.
