About This Test
VEGF is a modulator of angiogenesis & promotes new blood vessel formation. This is achieved by inducing migration of endothelial cells, promoting mitoses of endothelial cells & upregulating matrix metalloproteinase activity. VEGF also regulates pathological blood vessel formation as in tumor growth & metastasis, Macular degeneration, Rheumatoid arthritis and polyneuropathy syndromes. This assay has value in the evaluation of patients with various types of cancer who are being considered for anti-angiogenesis therapy.
