What the PSA Test (Prostate Specific Antigen, Total) measures
Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a protein made by the prostate gland, and a small amount normally passes into the blood. The total PSA test measures that amount. PSA can rise for several reasons: prostate cancer, but also a benign enlargement of the prostate that is common as men get older, infection or inflammation of the prostate, a recent urinary catheter, and even recent ejaculation or vigorous cycling. Because of this, a raised PSA is a reason to talk to a doctor, not a diagnosis. Doctors look at the PSA value together with age, symptoms, examination findings and how the level changes over time, and may repeat it or order further tests before deciding anything. PSA is also used to follow men who have already been treated for prostate disease. Whether to test a man without symptoms is a decision best made with a doctor, who can explain the possible benefits and the chance of a false alarm.

How to prepare, the sample, and when to expect the report
Preparation
No fasting is needed. Avoid ejaculation and vigorous cycling for 48 hours before the sample. If you have recently had a urinary infection, a catheter or a prostate procedure, tell us, as the doctor may suggest waiting before testing.

Blood, from a vein in the arm (serum).
Reporting time
Within 24 hours.
Reading the result
Reference ranges differ between laboratories, so your report lists the laboratory’s own range beside each value. A result outside the range does not always mean illness; ask your doctor to explain it.
